Emerald City

Sometimes a great source can turn a routine story into something a lot more interesting. This is my first piece for the Chicago Tribune, about how a community rebuilds its after a nefarious bug has chewed down most of its trees.

Happy Britten-tennial!

One of my favorite parts about being a writer is having a completely legitimate excuse to talk with people at the very top of their fields. For my latest piece at Chicago Music, I interviewed members from the Orion Quartet and Wu Han, from the Chamber Music Society at Lincoln Center! They’ll be in Millennium Park tomorrow night, and I highly recommend checking out their charming Benjamin Britten birthday concert if you’re in the Windy City.

GOIN’ UP THE COUNTRY

When I was but a wee little dweeb, I became obsessed with the late Canadian pianist Glenn Gould. (I remember, completely delusionally, setting an egg timer on top of our piano to time myself playing Invention No. 13 in under 45 seconds just like him…the fastest I clocked was about 58 seconds and it was a total mess). I had a picture of him in my locker. The fangirling continues to this day: this Month I got to write about Gould’s “Idea of North” for ChicagoMusic.org.

What If Marriage Were Temporary?

I was reading my great-uncle’s old copy of Gulliver’s Travels when I got the idea for my latest Atlantic story: What if marriage had an expiration date? Later, my friend told me one of the Real Housewives of Orange County had beat me to the punch, the cow.

Benjamin Britten’s Hipster Mo’

It’s so fun to write for one of my best friends, Margie, who edits the classical section of ChicagoMusic.org

Skirting the Issue

A story I wrote for Rebellious Mag’s “What’s in a Name?” Issue. Obviously, it takes an immense amount of bravery for anyone to come out as transgender, but it requires bravery from their friends and family, too.

A meditation…

I’m so excited for my first story for the Atlantic! Why the word “panties is so awful”

i’ve been an enormous fan of the Atlantic for years and years. I hope it’s the first of many.
